Unforgiving Landscapes

Although the flora and fauna of this region are known for their remarkable resilience, that does not lessen the reality of how harsh and unforgiving the landscape truly is.

Many of the traits that allow these species to survive in such demanding conditions are the result of long-term adaptations that enable them to withstand extreme heat and prolonged dryness.

For example, several ungulate species, such as oryx, gazelles, and even mountain-dwelling species like the Arabian Tahr can go for extended periods without drinking water, and instead relying on moisture derived from the shrubs and other sparse vegetation they eat. The Arabian Red Fox and Blanford's Fox have protective tufts of fur between their paw pads that help shield them from scorching sand. Similarly, Arabian and Dhofar toads are able to burrow into the ground to retain moisture and stay cool, an ability that becomes especially important as rainfall in the wadis grows increasingly scarce.
